Morning of the Sentence
On the morning of Rukia's execution, in the Sixth Division barracks, Captain Byakuya Kuchiki stands before a shrine to Hisana Kuchiki. The picture is of his deceased wife Hisana Kuchiki who noticeably bears a striking resemblance to Rukia. He is informed by someone kneeling outside the entrance that it is time to depart for Sōkyoku Hill. After acknowledging this, Byakuya tells Hisana's picture that he is going and closes the shrine and departs for the execution grounds.
Gather Together! Group of the Strongest Shinigami!
Suddenly, Byakuya says something to Unohana, who expresses slight surprise before informing Rukia that Byakuya is asking for her. After Rukia walks over to him, Byakuya asks her if she is there, which she confirms, and reveals that there is something which he wants to tell her. Upon being told by Byakuya that he lost his wife fifty years ago on a spring morning before the first plum tree blossomed, Rukia expresses sorrow and identifies Byakuya's wife as Hisana Kuchiki as she recalls the Nobutsune Seike telling her that she was adopted into the Kuchiki Clan because she looked like Hisana. However, Byakuya informs Rukia that this was a lie he told the others to tell her.
Byakuya clarifies Hisana was actually Rukia's older sister, shocking Rukia, before recounting how Hisana was sent to Inuzuri in the Rukongai alongside Rukia after she passed away in the Human World, where she found it hard to survive while caring for Rukia and eventually abandoned her. Recalling how Hisana never forgave herself for this, Byakuya recounts how Hisana searched for Rukia almost every day for the next five years after becoming his wife as he remembers the request she made in their last spring together. In the past, Hisana lies on a mat before a kneeling Byakuya and asks him to find Rukia, but not tell her they are sisters and use his power to protect her.
While Byakuya tells her to save her strength, Hisana claims that she has no right to call Rukia sister after abandoning her, though she wants Byakuya to allow Rukia to call him brother. With Byakuya attempting to direct her attention to a blooming cherry blossom on a branch of the tree behind him, Hisana apologizes for causing Byakuya trouble even now and being unable to repay the love he showed her and describes the five years she spent with Byakuya as being like a beautiful dream before passing away, leaving Byakuya holding her hand as he grieves. In the present, Byakuya concludes that he found Rukia a year later and brought her into the Kuchiki Clan.
Detailing how allowing someone from the Rukongai into the clan was against their laws and led to many in the clan resisting since they felt that it would sully the family's reputation, Byakuya declares that he did not care due to his desire to uphold the promise he made to Hisana, but notes that he had already broken the law when he took Hisana for his wife and recalls how he swore at the graves of his parents to uphold the law and never break it again upon taking Rukia in. After observing that he made two vows he should not have made because of Hisana's passing, Byakuya admits that he did not know what to do when Rukia was condemned.
Byakuya notes that Rukia's sentence it left him caught between the oath he made to his parents and the promise he made to Hisana, and as he looks over at Ichigo, whom he recalls proclaiming that he would fight the law if he were in Byakuya's position, Byakuya thanks him and apologizes to Rukia as she holds his hand, leaving Rukia stunned.
Evidence[]

Quotes[]
- (To Rukia Kuchiki) "When you were sentenced to death, I was dumbfounded. The oath to my parents to follow and defend the rules, or the promise to Hisana to protect her sister. Which one should I keep? Ichigo Kurosaki, you have my gratitude. Rukia, I am sorry."[264]
- (To Byakuya Kuchiki) "Byakuya-sama, please find my sister. Then after you find her, please do not tell her that I am her sister. Without telling her anything, please Byakuya-sama, please protect my sister no matter what. I abandoned her, so I don't deserve to be her sister, so I hope that she can be Byakuya-sama's sister."[4]
- (To Byakuya Kuchiki) "Even at the end, I am still asking more of you. I am very sorry I couldn't return Byakuya-sama's love. I am sorry. Being with Byakuya-sama for the past five years was like a dream come true for me, Byakuya-sama."[5]

Fade to Black[]
At the Kuchiki Manor, Byakuya walks into his chambers before suddenly stopping, which prompts Nobutsune Seike to ask him if something is bothering him. Claiming that it is nothing, Byakuya goes through several rooms in his quarters before arriving at his study, where he sees a desk with papers on it and one of Rukia's drawings carved into the wood. Byakuya stands in front of a shrine and looks at a portrait of Hisana Kuchiki. When Kon voices his belief that this picture is of Rukia, Byakuya tells him to keep his voice down as he turns around, leading Ichigo to apologize for bothering him.
Ichigo asserts that he is trying to not cause a commotion here and notes that this is a picture of Hisana before observing that she looks a lot like Rukia. As Ichigo asks Byakuya if he has noticed something strange is going on, Byakuya's attendant sees him from afar and moves away. When Byakuya asks Ichigo what is talking about, Ichigo tells him to not play ignorant and affirms that Rukia is Hisana's sister, which Byakuya should know very well. While Byakuya says Rukia's name, Ichigo details how she is his younger sister-in-law whom he tried to protect even if it meant breaking the rules.
Walking up to Byakuya, Ichigo notes he does not remember her either as Byakuya turns to the shrine and asks Ichigo how he knew his wife's name was Hisana. As Ichigo begins to answer, the other doors in the room open, revealing Shinigami standing behind them.
As the dust settles, Byakuya unsheathes his Zanpakutō and utters the release command, but after a tense moment, he reveals Hisana was born in the 78th district of Rukongai, Inuzuri, prompting Ichigo to thank him as he vanishes.
Elsewhere, at a park, Byakuya sits and recalls his past with Hisana. In the past, Byakuya and Hisana walk over a bridge. When Byakuya asks if Hisana went to Rukongai again today, Hisana confirms this and apologizes, but Byakuya clarifies that he is just concerned about her health. Apologizing, Hisana states she feels she has to do this before suddenly breaking into a coughing fit.
As Hisana falls to her knees, Byakuya expresses concern, prompting her to say she is alright. Byakuya asserts that she is not and that she needs to get some rest, but Hisana merely smiles at him and states that she must continue her search, no matter how far she pushes herself. In the present, Byakuya notes she was searching everywhere but he does not remember what she was searching for. Getting up, he pulls back a panel to reveal a bookshelf, where he pulls one of the books out and reads through it before expressing surprise at something.
When she vanishes, Ichigo looks around in confusion. As Renji tells Ichigo that she is coming at him from behind, Rukia appears behind him and puts her scythe to his throat while grinning. Suddenly, Byakuya uses Bakudō #61. Rikujōkōrō, immobilizing Rukia with six yellow bands and throwing her away.
As Rukia struggles to free herself, Renji wonders what is happening. When Rukia demands to know who Byakuya is, Byakuya recalls Hisana and draws his Zanpakutō, prompting a shocked Ichigo to tell him to not do it. Byakuya states that he has no choice if what Ichigo says is true and asserts that it is his responsibility while Rukia screams as dark Reiatsu surges around her. Telling Byakuya to not do this, Ichigo claims Rukia is still in there because he can feel her soul and proclaims that they Homura and Shizuku cannot destroy the connection as Rukia continues to scream.
